1. Dust comes back fast
If furniture needs dusting a day or two after you clean, your system may be moving dust around the house.
2. Buildup around vents
Gray or dark rings around supply registers and return grilles mean dust is passing through. Remove a cover and look inside with a flashlight.
3. A musty smell when the system runs
An odor when the AC or heat turns on can come from dust or moisture in the ducts. Near the beach, humidity makes this more common.
4. Pet hair at the returns
Fur collects at return grilles and inside the ducts, especially with shedding pets.
5. Allergies are worse indoors
Sneezing or itchy eyes that ease when you leave the house can point to dust in the system.
6. Remodeling or smoke
Drywall dust and sawdust get pulled into the returns during construction, and wildfire smoke and ash can enter through returns and leaks.
What to do
Change your filter first. If the signs continue, have the ducts inspected. The EPA guidance on duct cleaning suggests cleaning when ducts are clogged with debris, show mold, or have signs of pests. We inspect first and tell you honestly whether cleaning is needed.
