Humidity and dryer lint
Dry lint moves through a vent easily. Damp lint doesn't: it clumps, sticks to the walls of the vent and builds up faster, especially at bends and the outside cap. In Venice, Marina del Rey and Playa del Rey, the marine layer keeps humidity high much of the year.
Salt air and metal parts
Salt in the air corrodes metal over time. Exterior dryer vent caps, flaps and screens near the beach often stick, rust or break, and a stuck flap can trap lint or let in birds and pests.
Outdoor HVAC equipment
AC condensers near the ocean collect salt on their coils and fins. Rinsing the coil gently and keeping the area clear helps the unit run efficiently.
Musty smells
High humidity can lead to musty odors in ducts and returns, especially in homes that are closed up for long periods.
A simple yearly routine
- Dryer vent cleaning once a year
- Check the exterior vent cap and flap
- Change HVAC filters every 1 to 3 months
- HVAC check-up once a year
- Duct cleaning every few years, or sooner if you notice dust or odors
